Youth Opportunities on Commissions
Youth Application to be Considered for City-Appointed or Volunteer Positions
The youth of Meridian are creative, engaging, and demonstrate incredible character; this is why Meridian City leaders have looked to our young adults for insight and input to the City of Meridian and its various commissions, boards, and task forces. Commissions are authorized to assess the needs of the Meridian community and to make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council. Youth who are up for this rewarding challenge are being sought for this unique opportunity. Opportunity exists for youth to secure one of the following commissions for a one year term.
Historical Preservation Commission - A five member board that works to preserve the character and fabric of historically significant areas and structures with the City of Meridian in order to honor and preserve its rich heritage for future generations. They meet the second Thursday of every month at 5:30 pm at City Hall.
Meridian Arts Commission - A seven member board that advises on art/cultural policy and promotes public awareness and participation in the arts. They are responsible for selecting the monthly artist for Initial Point Gallery in Meridian City Hall, choosing musicians for Concerts on Broadway, and developing public art projects. They meet the second Thursday of every month at 3:30 pm at City Hall.
Parks and Recreation Commission - A nine member board that advises on issues related to parks, pathways, and recreational programming. They meet the second Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm at City Hall.
Solid Waste Advisory Commission - A nine member board that advises on rules, regulations, policies and fees as such may relate to the orderly and efficient administration of the City’s fully-automated solid waste collection system. They meet the fourth Wednesday of every month at 4:00 pm at City Hall.
Transportation Commission - A nine member board that works to research and recommend City traffic safety issues, actions, and transportation matters. They meet the first Monday of every month at 3:30 pm at City Hall.
In addition to these Commissions youth who are up for this rewarding challenge are being sought for this unique opportunity. Opportunity exists for youth to serve on one of the following task forces and organizations.
Meridian Anti-Drug Coalition - This is a grass-roots volunteer organization dedicated to educating others about the harmful and costly direct and indirect effects of drug abuse in the community. They meet the third Thursday of every month at 4:00 pm at the Meridian Police Department.
Mayor’s Faith Ambassador Council - Adult and youth representatives from Meridian s places of worship and faith organizations comprise this non-denominational group which discusses ways to strengthen families and youth. They meet quarterly at 4:00 pm at City Hall.
Selected applicants will be appointed to a one year term from October to September and will attend a monthly meeting of the Commission and other meetings as required by the Commission. In addition, selected applicants will attend a monthly meeting of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) to provide informational updates and receive feedback from the members of the MYAC.
