Meridian City Hall, located in downtown Meridian, Idaho, celebrated its grand opening on November 21, 2008. It is a Silver LEED-certified three-story 100,000 square foot building which serves as the hub of Meridian's municipal government and sets an example of building to maximize functional efficiencies while reducing environmental impact.
City Hall currently houses City Departments and serves as a convenient "one-stop-shop" for citizens seeking services in the areas of:
Utility Billing (water, sewer, trash)
Recreation Program Registration
Economic Development Information
When faced with the need for a new City Hall, a downtown location was chosen because the project would complement Meridian's downtown plan, support the vision of downtown Meridian as a designation, and acknowledge city government's role in promoting a vibrant city center. Meridian City Hall was built with an eye to the future and should be able to accommodate the needs of a city of 170,000 or more.
The exterior of Meridian City Hall was designed as a gathering place for residents and visitors, with a spacious outdoor plaza and permanent amphitheater for outdoor seating and public performances. Water features pay homage to the importance of creeks and canal to Meridian's agricultural roots. A Heritage Pavilion, built of bricks salvaged from the creamery that once occupied the land City Hall now occupies, houses a time capsule to be opened far in the future. The plaza features lighted pathways, an elegant antique-style clock, and public restroom facilities.
Interpretive Panels located throughout the plaza lend insight into Meridian's past, focusing on four eras in Meridian’s history and the major components that influenced each era: Irrigation, Village, Rail Transportation, and Creamery. Also included is a panel regarding the Past, Present and Future.
Visitors who come inside Meridian City Hall will notice a large metal sculpture hanging above the main lobby. The sculptural design -- called "Origin" and created by local artist Amber Conger -- is an abstract interpretation of antique surveying equipment and mapping symbols, including elements of transits, scales, compass rose, and a plumb-bob.
Additional artwork can be viewed up on the third floor during City Hall's regular business hours in Initial Point Gallery -- an elegant art display space maintained by the Meridian Arts Commission. Rotating displays of juried works by local fine artists can be viewed free of charge by the public any time City Hall is open. Meridian City Hall is also home to the Meridian History Center, a volunteer-operated education center and office where records, photographs, and memorabilia relating to Meridian's rich history are maintained, displayed, and archived. The Meridian History Center is located on the first floor of Meridian City Hall, just inside the main entrance. This volunteer-run center maintains limited business hours. Last but not least, visitors can enjoy our Little Free Library located in Meridian City Hall's outdoor plaza near the gazebo. This is a community book exchange box that operates on a "Take a Book; Return a Book" basis. It is filled with books for all ages. Anyone who wishes to donate book(s) for the Little Free Library can either place the books inside or drop them off at the information desk inside Meridian City Hall's main lobby.
