HPC Student Competition
OVERVIEW: The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is hosting a competition for students to encourage them to explore the history of Meridian. We hope that the students involved will gain a better understanding of Meridian and be able to communicate their experience as a Meridian resident.
Submissions will be categorized in elementary school, middle school, and high school groups, and an award will be given to the student with the top score in each category. The awards will be $500 for the high school student, $200 for the middle school student, and an annual family membership to Zoo Boise for the elementary school student.
ELIGIBILITY: This call is open to students regardless of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, or disability. Submissions will be accepted from West Ada School District students in high school, middle school, and elementary school students.
PROMPTS: These projects will be a response to one of the prompts below, according to the grade of the student.
Middle and High School Students Prompt: Historically, Meridian’s identity has centered around its booming agricultural and dairy industry; however, in recent years, the agricultural and dairy industries have not dominated Meridian as they once did. Meridian’s heritage will always be connected to its farms, fields, stock shows, and dairy production but now Meridian is going through a transitory period. What is Meridian’s identity today? What should residents and visitors know about Meridian?
To help you ponder these questions, imagine that you are 50 years in the future, writing a history book, giving a tour, or creating an image of Meridian in 2021. How would you describe the Meridian that you experience today to future generations? What do you think Meridian should be remembered for?
Elementary School Students Prompt: What is your favorite historical place to visit in Meridian? Why do you think this place is important?
DEADLINE: To be considered, all materials must be received by HPC by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, 2021.
